Notes on Writing a “30 Minute” Sitcom Note: This guide is a work in progress. Sitcoms are easy to write and cheap to film. If you want to build a career in the entertainment industry, you can build a portfolio pretty quickly and easily writing sitcoms and filming them yourself.
It’s important to distinguish the kind of show you are writing. Whether you are writing a multiple-camera comedy or a single-camera comedy makes a big difference. A procedural drama and an episodic drama are two different animals. Reading scripts for shows with a similar format can be a great help in narrowing your focus.

Indeed, despite all of the critical praise for the cutting-edge hipness of recent single-cam sitcoms and the corresponding disparagement of the imposition of audience laughter (whether real or canned), some TV writers strongly defend the multi-camera format and believe that a laugh track simply puts constructive pressure on them to write funnier lines.
A sitcom typically lasts around 30 minutes. In the early days of television, the show's advertising came before the opening credits and at the end credits, using only about two and a half minutes of the show's 15 or 30 minutes. Frequent advertising breaks cut today's half hour programs down to 22 minutes.
Multicamera television scripts (think: anything with a laugh track) have the most unique formatting elements of the common script variations. Multicamera shows are shot on a stage in front of an audience, so their scripts look like a hybrid of screenplay format and play format.

The page counts for sitcoms vary. From established writers and showrunners, a half hour sitcom script can be as long as 44 pages. Keep in mind that sitcoms are more often than not dialogue heavy, which would account for the increased page counts. For novice writers, it’s best to shoot for 22-25 pages to get you under that thirty minute gauge.
